Sefton Council wants to make it safer for everyone to move around Southport’s Norwood area and it wants local people’s view on the proposals.

A new online survey is live on the Council’s Your Sefton Your Say website, until Thursday 15^th August, for people to submit their views. You can use this link to have your say.

Slowing traffic

The Council plans to make Norwood safer by slowing traffic and discouraging drivers from cut through residential areas. It wants to encourage drivers to use the main routes, such as Norwood Road, Norwood Avenue and Roe Lane.

The Norwood Mitigation scheme is designed to complement the Southport Eastern Access Improvement scheme, which is a bigger scheme that covers Eastbank Street/Bridge Street to Kew Roundabout, and also connects to Foul Lane and Meols Cop Station.

Highway improvements

The Southport Eastern Access Improvement scheme involves highway improvements to reduce congestion on the eastern approaches to Southport. It also includes measure for active travel - walking, cycling and wheeling – as well as safety improvements.

Traffic mitigation measures will address changes in traffic patterns resulting from the reopening of Foul Lane, which may in turn affect traffic flows in and around Norwood. The scheme is designed to address while at the same time making it easier for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users to travel around.

Workshops

The Council has worked with Norwood ward councillors, and our Neighbourhoods Teams to develop the ideas for improvements in Norwood. In line with its commitment to develop its proposals in collaboration with the community, it has already held two workshops with local people, in Spring 2024.

These events have broadened the Council’s understanding of the issues in the area as well as being an opportunity to discuss potential solutions. Responses received through this process have been fed back into the designs for improvements which are shown in the online consultation.

Bus routes

Sefton Council and at Liverpool City Region Combined Authority have worked together to ensure the scheme considers other things like existing bus routes. As part of our wider engagement on this project we are also talking directly to the local schools and helping to support them with their wider transport challenges.
