How do I claim Universal Credit?

Contacting the Council during Covid-19: important information

Our One Stop shops are closed during the Covid-19 pandemic, however we are currently reviewing all operating arrangements in line with Government guidance, including a risk assessment, before a decision is made for the date of reopening. We are also experiencing an extremely high volume of calls to our Contact Centre during Covid-19, if you call, you may face long delays.

Universal Credit claims are made and maintained, online. See the Apply for Universal Credit link in the 'Do it online' area of this page.

If you have any difficultly with the online claim process you should contact Citizens Advice who offer a ‘Help to Claim’ service.

‘Help to Claim’ can provide assistance by way of:

  • Citizens Advice Sefton website here
  • Telephone advice: 0800 144 8444
  • Webchat, which you access here

‘Help to Claim’ will help you to:

  • Check if Universal Credit is right for you
  • Set up email addresses and a Universal Credit account
  • Fill in your initial application
  • Work through your claim to-do list
  • Confirm your identity & provide evidence
  • Get ready for monthly payments
  • Access financial support and other payment options if you are struggling to manage
  • Understand your claimant commitment

For general information, you can contact the DWP’s Universal Credit advice line on 0800 328 5644.
